FIRST NAME ISAAC (BUT KNOWN AS ERNEST).
MIDDLE NAMES(S) BEN REUBEN ERNEST.
SURNAME ROBINSON.
RANK Private.
SERVICE NUMBER 81747
BATTALION ‘D’ Company 5th Battalion.
REGIMENT Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment).
DATE AND PLACE ENLISTED 18th December 1914 in Winnipeg.
DATE FIRST SERVED IN THEATRE OF WAR 1915 in France and Belgium.
INFORMATION ABOUT SERVICE
Ernest was living in Wardenville, Saskatchewan, aged 20 years old and 2 months when he enlisted. He was 5’8” tall, blue eyed and brown haired and declared fit and healthy. His date of birth is incorrectly listed as 1892 on his record. He served for just 5 months before he was killed.
INFORMATION ABOUT REGIMENT
The 5th Battalion became known as the ‘Red Saskatchewans’, because of its red divisional shoulder patch and the high percentage of Saskatchewan men in its ranks. In the ‘Battle of Festubert’ on 15th-25th May 1915 most of the officers and senior NCO’s were either killed or wounded. Despite this, the 5th Battalion was able to capture a German strongpoint and 130 yards of enemy trench and held its position until relieved on 25th May. They were the only units of their brigade to achieve their mission during the battle.
PLACE OF DEATH Roeselare, Near Ypres, Belgium.
EVENTS LEADING TO DEATH The war diary records for 26th May 1915 shows that there were no casualties on that particular day although there were a number of funerals. On 25th May 1 man was killed, on 24t,h 30 men died, 7 died on 22nd and 4 died on 21st. The official date for Ernest was recorded as 26th May by CWGC indicating that he may have been missing beforehand. The Saskatchewan on-line War Memorial states Ernest was taken prisoner two days before his death, and there are puzzling notes in his file indicating that the German government reported him as died from poisoning at Roeselare (later comments are worded as died from wounds while a prisoner of war).
