Herbert was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Schaefer. On 04 Jun 1927 he married Mildred Ewald and they had one son, Richard. The 1930 Census enumerated Herbert as being a worker in an aluminum piston factory. By 1940 he was working as a sander in a retail paint shop. In the late 1950's Herbert was a painter at Vordenberg Chevrolet in Cincinnati. He died at the age of 80.
