Civil War Union Army Officer, US Congressman. Born in Mantua, Ohio, he moved to Lawrence, Kansas Territory, in 1858, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1861. With the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned a Lieutenant in Company D, 2nd Kansas Regiment, Volunteer Infantry. He served continuously until he was mustered out of the volunteer service as Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 4th Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry on June 30, 1865. Returning to Kansas, he served as Colonel in command of the 19th Regiment, Kansas Cavalry, during the Plains Indian Wars (1867-68). He returned to his law practice, engaged in the wholesale grocery business and was treasurer of Douglas County, Kansas (1886-87). He contested as a Democrat the election of Edward H. Funston to the Fifty-third Congress and was awarded the position serving (1894-95). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he returned to Kansas and was vice president of the National Bank in Lawrence, until his death at age 77.
