"The next birth was twins again, Alva and Alma, born March 12, 1870. When the twins were three years old, little Alma drowned in a spring near the house. Only six months earlier they had lost their baby, Rose Ellen. Jane was then expecting her tenth child. As she sat at a window doing some needlework, she was startled by what seemed to be the dashing of water against the window pane. In a few minutes word of little Alma's drowning was brought to her. She felt that the Lord had sent her a warning of the sad news."
