The village is near the mouth of the River Axe, and is about one mile inland, on the east bank of the Axe estuary. The Axmouth Parish extends along the estuary to the sea, and a significant distance to the east. In the will of King Alfred the Great, who died in 899 AD, Axmouth was left to his youngest son Aethelweard. According to Historic England, 'Axmouth was ranked as a major port by the mid-14th century and accounted for 15% of the country's shipping trade'. The remains of a late medieval fishing boat can be seen at low tide in the River Axe, just south-west of the village.

3) Elizabeth married Samuel Bartlett in 1847.
They immigrated to America in 1857, eventually settled in Ventura, California, USA.
4) George married Matilda Love in 1846. They were innkeepers in Colyton, Devon, England.
5) Eleizer married Sarah Stimpson in 1850.
They immigrated to America in 1854, eventually settled in Morgan County, Illinois, USA.
6) Albert immigrated to Australia in 1849.
He married Isabella Andrews in 1850 after meeting her aboard the ship Thomas Arbuthnot.
7) Charles Sampson who died shortly after birth.
8) Anne married David Richards in 1855. He died in 1857. In 1863 Anne married William Williams who had been a boarder at her mother's home in 1861.

Apr 16, 1850, James was a Toll Gate Keeper per son Eleizer's marriage certificate.
Mar 30, 1851 Census, James is a Renter of Turnpike Gate in Chard, Somerset, England. Their daughter Anne and widowed daughter Mary Batstone with her daughter Julia Batstone live with them on Fore Street.
1852 James died of consumption [tuberculosis] in Colyford, Devon, England at the age of 55.
Dec 29, 1852, James was buried in in the Parish of Axmouth in the County of Devon at St Michael Church. Ceremony performed by Curate George Thomas Comyns.
