Eleanor Searns and her twin Mary Searns were born Mar 26, 1796 in the village of Axmouth, in the County of Devon, in southwestern England to John Searns and Ann (Nanny) Cossens.

Her parents married on Apr 10, 1792 at St. Michael's Church in Axmouth, the Vicar was Richard Hallett. Their oldest child, Nanney Searns was born Feb 26, 1793 in Axmouth and baptized by Vicar Richard Hallett.

Apr 17, 1796, Eleanor and Mary were Baptized in the Parish of Axmouth.

Aug 2, 1799, at the age of three, Eleanor's mother Ann died 39 days after giving birth on Jun 24, 1799 to her son John Searns. He died on May 19, 1800, his death and burial was recorded by Vicar Richard Hallett of Axmouth Parish.

May 3, 1803, at the age of seven, Eleanor's father John may have died in Axmouth.

VILLAGE OF AXMOUTH
The village is near the mouth of the River Axe, and is about one mile inland, on the east bank of the Axe estuary. The Axmouth Parish extends along the estuary to the sea, and a significant distance to the east. The village is over 1,100 years old. In the will of King Alfred the Great, who died in 899 AD, Axmouth was left to his youngest son Aethelweard. According to Historic England, 'Axmouth was ranked as a major port by the mid-14th century and accounted for 15% of the country's shipping trade'. The remains of a late medieval fishing boat can be seen at low tide in the River Axe, just south-west of the village.

Aug 19, 1817, Eleanor, at the age of 21, married James Griffin at St. Michael's Church in Axmouth, Vicar is Richard Southcott Hallett.

They had the following eight children:
1) Eleanor married Charles Batstone in 1838; they lived in Axminster, Devon, England.

2) Mary married John Batstone; they lived in Axminster, Devon, England.
After John's death in 1849, she married Joseph Wesley in 1852.
They immigrated to America in 1856, eventually settled in Lenawee, Michigan, USA.

3) Elizabeth married Samuel Bartlett in 1847.
They immigrated to America in 1857, eventually settled in Ventura, California, USA.

4) George married Matilda Love in 1846. They were innkeepers in Colyton, Devon, England.

5) Eleizer married Sarah Stimpson in 1850.
They immigrated to America in 1854, eventually settled in Morgan County, Illinois, USA.

6) Albert immigrated to Australia in 1849. In 1850 after meeting her aboard the ship Thomas Arbuthnot, he married Isabella Andrews .

7) Charles Sampson who died shortly after birth.

8) Anne married David Richards in 1855. They had a son Thomas Griffin Richards and daughter Susan Ellen Richards. David died in 1857. In 1863 Anne married William Williams who had been a boarder at her mother's home in 1861. They had three daughters Annie, Elizabeth Gertrude, and Edith Mary, and one son William George.

1841 Census, Husband James is a Flax Dresser and they live at Turnpike House in Musbury, Devon, England with youngest 2 sons and daughter; 3 miles SW of Axminster.

Apr 16, 1850 James is a Toll Gate Keeper according to her son Eleizer's marriage certificate.

1851Census, Renter of Turnpike Gate in Chard, Somerset, England.

Oct 1852 James died when she was 56 years old.

1861 Census, Eleanor is Head of the house in Axmouth, her daughter Anne Richards with her two young sons live with her as well as a boarder, William Williams who later married Anne.

1871 Census, Eleanor lives with daughter Anne Williams family in Shaftesbury, Dorset, England. William is a National Schoolmaster, Anne is a Schoolmistress, and their son Tom, at age 15, is a Pupil Teacher. Five more children at home.

Jul 9, 1886, Eleanor dies in Loose, Maidstone, Kent, England. She died of senile decay and exhaustion. Informant was her granddaughter Edith M. Williams per comment by cordeliamary1. Another family tree has Eleanor death date as 1892.
