Shubhendra Shankur was born at his grandfather's compound or gurukul in Maihar, India. His mother's father was the guru and lead musician of Brijnath Singh Maharaja of Maihar, Satna district in Madha Pradesh. Baba Allauddin Khan was instructor and guru to both Shubho's mother and his father. His mother, then known as Roshanara Khan, taught him sitar, but he left for America with his father without completing his training. Living in Ravi's home in California, he focused on graphic arts and earned a dgree from the Otis Art Institute of the Parsons School of Design. His first performance with Ravi in America was Carnegie Hall in New York, "Fathers and Sons,"with tabla players Alla Rakha and his son Zakir Hussain. They toured Europe and Asia, and, back in America, played the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

At a concert at Whittier College, Shubho met Linda, soon to be his wifw and the mother of two. He stayed home with the family for almost eight years, gradually playing less and less. Some believe he was strongly affected by a poor review of a performance in India. He seemed to distance himself from everyone. After several months of illness, Shubho died of pneumonia at Los Alamitos Medical Center near his home at Garden Grove, California.
