Ernest L. Carter, 70, of New Dam Road died Tuesday afternoon at the Newton Center after a long illness.

Born here, son of Dennis and Blanche Jones Carter, he attended local schools and served in the Army during World War II.

He was employed at the former Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills, the former Sutton Mills, as a carpenter, and for George Roberts in Alfred. He served as a reserve Sanford police officer in the 1960s. He retired in 1984 because of ill health.

He loved the outdoors, and especially hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Trappers Association of Maine.

Two daughters died previously, Maria May Carter in 1953, and Frances Arlene Carter in 1972.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Geraldine E. Carter; two daughters, Patricia Hamel of Old Orchard Beach, and Sylvia Tillson of Biddeford; a sister, Arlene Knight of Rochester, N.H.; and two grandsons, Ronald Tillson of Sanford and Trevor Tillson of Biddeford.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 6 in Evergreen Cemetery, Alfred. Arrangements are by Heald Funeral Home, Springvale.
