Lt. Kniupis, 25, a flight instructor, was the daughter of Boston Police Sgt. Albert Kniupis, attached to the Mobile Operations Patrol.
A member of the 96th Flying Training Squadron at Williams Air Force Base, Calif., Lt. Kniupis had taken off on a navigational training flight with student flier, 2d Lt. Britt A. Simpkins of Carlin, Nev.
Shortly after becoming airborne, Lt. Kniupis reported that the engine of the plane was overheating and that she was returning to her base.
Lt. Kniupis' father said her friends at the base reported that while attempting the crash landing, "she did everything possible to avoid crashing into a base housing development and a swimming pool with about 90 persons in it."
Lt. Simpkins was killed instantly and Lt. Kniupis died a short time later at the base infirmary.
Lt. Kniupis was a graduate of Girls Latin High School, attended Boston State College and graduated with a degree in management administration from the University of New Hampshire in 1979.
During her Air Force career she served at Westover AFB, Pease AFB in New Hampshire, Lackland AFB in Texas and Medina AFB in Texas, before moving to Williams.
She was a member and former treasurer of the New England District of the Knights of Lithuania.
In addition to her father, she leaves her mother, Elaine (Zabel) and two sisters, Laura of West Roxbury, and Andrea Davidson of Gary, Indiana.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
