U.S. Congressman. He completed preparatory studies in law, was admitted to the bar, practiced law in Kent's Parish, New York and was appointed first judge of Jefferson County in 1795. Moving to Cooperstown, New York, he was a member of the New York State Senate (1799-1803), served in the New York State Assembly (1807-10) and again appointed judge of Jefferson County in 1810. In 1813 he was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congresses, serving until 1817. After leaving Congress he resumed the practice of law until his death.
