U.S. Congressman. Immigrating to the United States, in 1783, he settled in Plattsburg, New York. There he became successful as a fur trader, the manufacture of potash and in shipping lumber. He was associate justice of the court of common pleas, (1788-96), commissioner of highways and school commissioner (1797-98). He also was supervisor of schools, (1799-1800) a member of the New York State Assembly in 1803 and judge of Clinton County, (1804-06). In 1805, he was elected as a Republican to the Ninth Congress, serving until 1807. Declining a re-nomination, he served as collector of customs at Plattsburg, from 1807, until his death.

In Memory of Peter SAILLY Esqr Who died on the 16th day of March 1826; Aged LXXII years. A native of Loranie in France he adopted America as his Country in the year 1785; The strength of his intellect, the benevolence of his heart, and the spotless integrity of his life, made him esteemed as a citizen, respected in various public offices, & beloved as a friend and relation. His disconsolate family have erected this frail monument of his exalted worth and of their affection.
