Angela Cannella, 83, a homemaker and candy wrapper whose skills as a tentmaker kept the rain and snow off U.S. soldiers during World War II, died Saturday, March 4, in her Glen Ellyn home.

Mrs. Cannella went to work shortly after finishing 8th grade, first as a candy wrapper for Baby Ruth Candy Co. in Chicago. "It was kind of like that episode on the old 'I Love Lucy' show," said her daughter, Marlene Slansky.

Later at Stevens Candy Co., Mrs. Cannella became a fancy wrapper and moved on to work for Helen Harrison Co. as a supervisor of candy wrappers.

A Cub Scout mother and PTA mom who excelled as a cook, Mrs. Cannella was noted for her Italian meatballs and butter cookies, said her daughter.

"At my mother's house you always got a great meal and were sent on your way with butter cookies," she said.

World War II interrupted her work in candy and Mrs. Cannella went to work for Poster Products, a Chicago company tooled up to make tents for the Army.

Mrs. Cannella was born in Chicago, IL and raised in the Our Lady of the Angels parish. Her 10-year-old son, George III, died in the 1958 fire at that school that took the lives of 92 children and three nuns.

"For years it was something you did not talk about," said her daughter, a survivor of the fire.

The fire not only robbed families of their children but also was a catalyst that broke up much of the neighborhood.

"Many people, including my parents, moved out of Chicago after the fire. We moved to Villa Park in 1960 and then to Lombard," said her daughter.

Mrs. Cannella also had a gift of being able to listen to people.

"She knew everybody's life story and had a way of making everybody she knew feel a little bit better,"she said. "Her hugs will be missed."

Mrs. Cannella is also survived by her husband, George; two sons, Michael and Ronald; a sister, Mary Benedetti; a brother, Tony Tomasello; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Leonard Memorial Home Ltd., 565 Duane St., Glen Ellyn. Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Petronille Catholic Church, 420 Glenwood Ave., Glen Ellyn.
