William, the son of Henry and Martha Lawrence, was a 26-year-old Clerk from East Boston, MA when he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 1st Massachusetts Infantry on May 23, 1861. In November 1862 he was promoted to the rank of Major and assigned as an Aide-de-Camp with the U.S. Volunteers. On March 12, 1866 he was breveted in quick succession as a Lt. Colonel, Colonel, and Brigadier General for distinguished service at Lookout Mountain Tennessee, to date from March 13, 1865. He was mustered out of military service on July 10, 1866.

William worked as a Clerk at the Customs House in Boston following his military service and was married, however, his wife hasn’t been identified. He was 40 when he died of Bronchitis at his home on Meridian St., East Boston, MA.
