Michael was born in Laredo,TX.He was raised
by his grandparents when he was 10 days old,
after his mother was killed in an auto accident
in Freeport and his father had been killed in
Monterrey,Mexico.Michael loved music and
liked playing a trumpet that his grandfather
had bought him.
It appears that after graduating from Highland
Park High School that Michael enlisted in the
Marines 15 July 1968 at the Chicago Recruiting
Office.
Michael arrived in Vietnam 17 April 1969 and
was assigned to Golf Company,2nd Battalion,
5th Marine Regiment,1st Marine Division.
Michael died 30 April 1969,at 1000H at the
Station Hospital in Danang,as a result of
fragmentation wounds to his head sustained
28 April 1969,at 0545H from a hostile grenade
while Golf Company was in a night defensive
position after having participated in a Search
and Clear Operation during the day.
Survived by his grandparents,Anastacio Salas
and Marcelina Salas and his uncle,Lawrence
Lara all of 8855 S Buffalo Ave,Chicago,IL.

Burial location is suppose to be at Saint
Mary's Cemetery in Evergreen,Cook County,IL.

The parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe of South Chicago suffered more war dead during the Vietnam War than any other Catholic parish in the U.S. This monument, erected in 1970 stands in memory of the sacrifice of twelve parishioners. It is located across the street from the church at 91st Street and Brandon in South Chicago.
