Susie Beatrice Yarborough was born on April 17, 1920 at 927 South Main Street, Louisburg, NC to parents Calvin R. Yarborough, Jr., and Anna Beatrice Green. Sometime during the early morning hours of November 19, 2013, she took her last breath in that very same house, as she transitioned to her heavenly home.
Susie had a strong and determined spirit, which was molded from a life filled with challenges. She lost her father to tuberculosis at the age of 8, and a few years later, found herself battling that same disease. After spending over two years of her adolescence at the North Carolina Sanitarium, Susie hailed victorious and returned to Louisburg to finish her education, graduating from Franklin County Training School in 1938. Susie held several jobs in her young adult life, but most notably she worked as a dorm matron at Johnson C. Smith University (then College), followed by many years as a secretary at the Perrys High School in Centerville. In 1968, she married Bennett Hawkins, and moved to New York City, where she lived and worked in Harlem, but upon the dissolution of that marriage, she returned to Louisburg, the home of her heart. Susie spent the next several years enjoying the company of, and then caring for her mother, Anna.
Susie Yarborough Hawkins was a dedicated servant and faithful member of Saint Paul Presbyterian Church for over 80 years. She was a church elder, and a member of the Presbyterian Women, having previously held offices at the local, state, and national levels. She loved her church, immensely, but above all else, Susie loved GOD.
Whether you knew her as "Sue", "Ms. Susie", "Mrs. Hawkins", "Cousin Sue", "Aunt Sue", or by some other name, she loved and prayed for you! She will always be remembered for sending cards for every occasion. She never missed a birthday or anniversary, and she knew them all by heart!
Ms. Hawkins was preceded in death by her parents, and all of her siblings: Vida, Priscilla, Fredrick, Calvin III, and Arthur. She will be dearly missed by her niece, Renate Yarborough Sanders, of Newport News, VA; nephews, Edgar Yarborough, of Virginia Beach, VA, and Henry Yarborough (Valerie) of Pensacola, FL, and great-nieces Natasha Logan (Brooklyn, NY), and Natalia Sanders (Washington, DC). Her memory will live on through a large host of cousins and friends, all of whom she held dear to her heart.
