U.S. Congressman. After studying theology, he was licensed as a Baptist minister in 1802 and was a minister in Halifax County, Virginia, in 1805. Entering politics, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth Congress, serving (1813 to 1815) and elected to fill the vacancy in the Fourteenth Congress caused by the death of Matthew Clay, serving (1815 to 1817). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the ministry, serving as a pastor of several Virginia Baptist churches until 1832. He then lived in retirement on a farm until his death.
