The son of Michigan Judge Henry Chipman and grandson of U.S. Senator Nathaniel Chipman, he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy from January 1833 until resigning in September 1846, following charges of being drunk on duty and insubordinate. He was a writer, and contributed to magazines including the "Knickerbocker" and "New York Magazine". Chipman never married and had no children.
