Navy Cmdr. Franklin A. Pinegar Jr., 36, a decorated veteran of the Vietnam war who had been a personnel officer at Navy headquarters in Washington since July 1980, died Sunday [April 19, 1981] at Alexandria Hospital after an acute asthmatic attack.
Cmdr. Pinegar, who graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1967, was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam from May 1969 to May 1970. During this time he earned two Distinguished Flying Cross medals 19 air medals, the Navy Commendation Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with bronze star.
After his war service, he spent three years flying search-and-rescue missions off the coasts of Japan, Vietnam and California. He later was stationed at the Naval Air Test Center at Patuxent River, Md., and graduated from the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.
Cmdr. Pinegar was born in New York City. His father, Ens. Franklin A. Pinegar, was kiled at Okinawa during World War II while serving as a gunnery officer aboard a destroyer.
Cmdr. Pinegar's survivors include his wife, Linda A., and a daughter, Chiristian, both of Alexandria, and his mother, Alice Egan of Pearl River, N.Y.
