John Carwie, age 82, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, died Thursday, December 26, 2013 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ann Bodden Carwie, two sons, John Gregory (Annette) Carwie of Mobile, Christopher Stephen (Lea) Carwie of Birmingham, and a daughter, Julie Amelia Carwie (Scott) Bryant of Birmingham. He is survived by seven grandchildren, Catherine Amelia Carwie, Anna Elizabeth Carwie, John Gregory Jay Carwie, Jr., James Parker Bryant, Nicholas Scott Bryant, Julia Caroline Carwie, and John Christopher Carwie. He is also survived by two sisters, Marie Carwie (Ernest) Koury of Elon College, NC, Amelia Millie Carwie (Dan) Haas of Atlanta, Georgia, a sister-in-law, Alice Holley Carwie, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents Amelia Ferniany Carwie and George Albert Carwie, Sr., his brother, George Bubba Carwie, and his sisters, Matilda Tillie Carwie (Leon) Prestia and Doris Carwie (""T.G."") Solomon. Johnny graduated from Murphy High School in 1949 and from Springhill College in 1954 with a degree in Biology. He was a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served in Korea in the Medical Services Corps. He was co-owner of Carwie Ace Hardware and Carwie Realty with his brother George for over forty years. Johnny was a past member of the Mobile Touchdown Club, the Senior Bowl Committee and many other organizations, and served as Chairman of the Board at Wilmer Hall. He also served on the vestry of both Christ Episcopal Church and St. Pauls Episcopal Church. He was an avid supporter of Springhill College athletics, and in 1998, he was inducted into the Springhill College Athletic Hall of Fame. Johnny was a founding member of the Springhill Colonel Dixie Coffee Club where he was affectionately referred to as the Mayor of Springhill. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 30, 2013, at 11:00 am at St. Pauls Episcopal Church. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 9:30 am in the Parish Hall. Interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wilmer Hall Childrens Home, 3811 Old Shell Road, Mobile, Alabama, 36608, or a charity of your choice .
