Roman Catholic Saint. He was born Luis Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga in Viña del Mar, Chile, and popularly known as "Padre Hurtado." He was a Roman Catholic priest of the Jesuit Order. With his canonization on October 23, 2005, by Pope Benedict XVI, he became Chile's second saint. He grew up poor and fatherless, as his father had died when he was only four years old. He was educated by the Jesuits in Santiago where he discerned a calling to the ministry. Best known for ministering to the Chilean poor, especially children and young adults. He was also a professor of religion and later educated future teachers in the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. His shelter, Hogar de Cristo (Home of Christ), took in abandoned children from poor families. He joined with the labor movement in 1947, assisting Chilean workers and founding the Chilean Trade Union Association, in order to instill Christian values in the labor unions. Cause of death: pancreatic cancer, in Santiago, Chile.
