son of Arthur R Johnson

US Marine Corps veteran, Sgt, World War II

Donald Johnson, 88, passed away Wednesday, Dec 25, 2013, at his home in Newark, Ohio. He will be buried next to his wife, Berneice Johnson, Jan 3, 2014, at Jamison Corners Cemetery, after a brief memorial service at the Gordon B Garrett Funeral Home, 303 North Washington St. Everyone is invited to join the service at 2 pm, which is being conducted by his nephew-in-law, Dr Barry E Cressman, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Titusville. Don, as he liked to be called, was a quiet, well read person who was very intelligent. He graduated in 1962 from Penn State as an electrical engineer. He worked for Hughes Aircraft in California, Ohio and even Germany, developing software for 25 years. He retired in 1987. As he aged, he had a few surgeries, but none was as meaningful to him as the cataract surgery, which gave him back his desire to read. As his wife, Berneice, dealt with Alzheimer's, losing her ability to communicate with and recognize family members, Don faithfully cared for her. He stayed with her every day, even when it became necessary to place her in a care facility. Don served our country honorably during World War II as a Marine sergeant, working with communications in the South Pacific. Despite any formal training, Don had a natural aptitude for construction. He, in large part, built the family home overlooking Cross Creek Golf Club. He also remodeled the house in California. In addition, Don was always available to help his son with his home in the countryside, outside the city of Newark, NJ. He is survived by his son, Richard Johnson, and wife, Peggie; his daughters, Susan Nelson, Mary Farley and husband, Glenn. Don was also proud of his grandchildren, Alex and Annie Johnson (mother Cheryl Johnson). In addition, he has grandchildren Sarah Martin, Rebecca Helser and Marie Justice (mother Peggie Johnson). He also enjoyed the company of his six great-grandchildren. He also has a sister, Jerry Kubiak, who worked many years in the nursing field.
