Capt. Mattaro was a graduate from St. John's Military Academy,
Washington and from Virginia Military Institute with honors. He earned an Army commission as second lieutenant; went to Vietnam and in four weeks was promoted to first lieutenant. On May 6 he was promoted to captain. His greatest wish was to be the youngest General in modern Army history. Captain Mattaro never got word of his promotion.
Capt. Mattaro attended School #52 before his family moved to the Washington area. The parents now live in Langley Park, Maryland. Because many of his relatives and friends live in Rochester, services for Capt. Mattaro were held May 18 in St. Francis Xavier Church. One of his brothers Joseph lives 211 Woodside Place, Irondequoit.
