In Sunday evening at 7 o'clock after a lengthy ailment, August Menninger Sr. died. He was born 21 Nov 1826 at Heldenbergen, Grand Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt, and so brought his age to 77 years, 3 months and 7 days. When he had reached the necessary age, he attended the schools of his father city, and after he left them with honors, he learned the smithy trade. At the end of 1844 he emigrated with his father to America. After a three month voyage over the ocean they arrived on 23 Jan 1845 in Baltimore. Here they remained until December 1847, when they moved to Cincinnati, where the deceased established a machine shop and iron foundry. At the beginning of May 1850 he married Miss Katharina Schmiedberger, with whom he lived 52 years in happy marriage, until she was snatched away from him and his family by death two years ago. The marriage was blessed with nine children, of which four likewise preceded their father in death. In 1860 he sold his business in Cincinnati and came to Tell City for health reasons. Here he took over the sawmill at that time at the foot of Tell Street and ran this with success for years, when he withdrew to private life. He always took the greatest interest in the flourishing of Tell City and took part in about every undertaking, and stood by everyone with advice and deed, if within his power. How much he was respected here can best be seen from his being elected several times as a member of the school board, which office he handled with pride and contributed not a little to the uplifting of our schools. Later he was elected as city treasure and ran this office conscientiously and to the satisfaction of all. His death is grieved by three daughters and two sons, namely Mrs. John T. Patrick, Mrs. R. Karcher, Miss Emma Menninger, August Menninger Jr, of here and Dr. Chas. Menninger of Topeka, Kansas, as well as a brother in Covington, one in New Orleans, two sisters living in Cincinnati, 22 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. On Wednesday afternoon his remains were buried, after a magnificent celebration in the Evangelical church conducted by Pastor Schlundt, in the presence of may grief bearers under the direction of the Odd Fellows, which he belonged to 56 years, and the Freemasons in the cemetery to their final rest. Peace to his ashes.
