Guy, the sixth of eight children of George and Matie Nowels, grew up on a farm near Glasco, Kan. After U.S. Army service in Europe during WWII, U.S. Postal work in Kansas, followed by a deployment to Korea, he settled his family in Portland. There, he became a U.S. Customs officer while remaining in the U.S. Army Reserve. He served in each capacity for over 25 years and retired from the army as a lieutenant colonel.

Guy was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Betsy (Sesler); and his son, Kent, a pathologist at Stanford University.

He is survived by his sister, of Concordia, Kan.; two daughters, both professional musicians; five grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and grandnieces and nephews. A service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 2201 S.W. Vermont St., Portland. A committal with military honors will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, in Willamette National Cemetery.
