When quite young he left home and went to Philadelphia, where he engaged his services as driver of an omnibus or stage line, at which he remained several years; he then went to Charleston, S.C., where he remained but a short time. From Charleston he drifted to Charlotte, N.C., where he afterwards held a very lucrative and responsible position in the United States Mint, and later still was employed by Kent and Bland on various stage lines, in the course of which he finally reached and settled at Hillsville, the county seat of Carroll County, Virginia. Here he met and wed the lady of his choice, Lucretia Browne. He has been described as a man of unsullied reputation and unquestioned integrity, firm and accurate in judgment, and had inherited an unusual share of the hardy vigor and energy of his ancestors.
