Howard served his country in the United States Army. On Febuary 11, 1956 he married the former Carol Finger at the Christ Luthern Church in Peshtigo, Wisconsin.
Howard farmed and was employed at the Badger Pulp Paper Mill, retiring from the Mill in 1994 and farming in 1997.
Howard was an avid sports fan of the Peshtigo High School Bulldogs, the Wisconsin Badgers and the Packers.
Howard and Carol had two sons, James Murphy and Michael Murphy and three daughters, Jean (Murphy)Wendland, Shirley (Murphy)Kiley and Patti (Murphy)Fritz who proceeded Howard in death on August 25, 1997.
Howard had three sisters, Loretta (Murphy)Brabant, Patricia (Murphy) Lindgren and Sally (Murphy) Anderson.
