Carl the son of Barbara R. Eddy and step-son of Charles T. Eddy of Framingham MA, the son of Carl Wakefield enlisted in the US Marine Corps on April 22 1966 in Boston MA. He arrived in Vietnam on August 2 1967 where he was assigned for duty with MTT (Mobile Training Team) 2-1, 1st CAG, III MAF.

CAP's (Combined Action Platoon's) were units where Marines would, live, train, and patrol with local Vietnamese PF's (Popular Forces) in their villages and who were little more than armed civilians. A squad of Marines would be assigned to villages that had a high enemy presence, to instill the fighting spirit in the local PF's so they can protect their families and fellow citizens against their enemy the Viet Cong and NVA.

On August 1, a training compound east of the Duong Phuoc (5) hamlet near the Bau Dong River in the Binh Son District of Quang Ngai Province was established by Marines of Mobile Training Team 2. In the early morning hours of the next day, the upper and lower compounds of CAP 1-3-3 and MTT-2 were attacked by a large VC force assaulted and breeched the defensive perimeter of the MTT-2 compound and were finally driven off by a reaction force that arrived to reinforce the Marines.

During the battle with the enemy seven Marines were killed in action, one of the casualties was Cpl Wakefield who was killed as fragmentation wounds from a hostile explosive device.

Casualties:

Rafael Olivarez Avila
David Chauncey Crane
William Charles Cue
