Jane Wilson Byron, age 77, died at her home, 128 South Prospect Street on Wednesday, February 13, 1946 of pneumonia. She was born in Union Town, Carroll County, Maryland to David Wilson, a chaplain with the United States Army and Annie Maria Zollikofer. She was married on October 8, 1889 at Fort Meade in the Dakota Territory to Joseph Charles Byron.
She was an accomplished pianist who served as the first honorary President of the Maryland Federation of Music Clubs and was a national Board Member of the National Federation of Music Clubs. She also served as Corresponding Secretary and Capitol District President of the National Federation. She was Treasurer of the Maryland Federation for 12 years. She was President of the Hagerstown Garden Club; former President of the Blue Ridge Garden Club in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania; member of the Treble Clef Club; honorary member of the Zonta Club; honorary Director of the Washington County S.P.C.A.; chair of the Washington County Branch of the Rosewood State Training School for Children; member of the Sulgrave Club of Washington; the Mount Vernon Club in Baltimore and the English Speaking Union in Baltimore. She was a graduate of the Western Maryland College in Westminster. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and was Treasurer of the Laura Hughes Memorial Society of the church.
Survivors included two sons, Major General Joseph W. Byron of Washington, D.C.; David W. Byron of Hagerstown; one daughter, Elsie Byron of Hagerstown and one half-sister, Mrs. Francis H. Pope of Washington, D.C.; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her son, former Congressman W.D. Byron died in an airplane crash in Georgia. Funeral services were held at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
