Peter was the son of Dr. Atkinson Pelham and Martha McGhee Pelham. During the War Between the States, Peter served with Co. C, 51st Alabama Partisan Rangers. His brother was the famous Major John Pelham, known as "The Gallant Pelham of Alabama" and "The Boy Artillerist." Peter was referred to as "Major" by his friends and associates in Worth County, though his military records state that he was a private. This was probably an honorary title.
