German Navy Admiral. He was the senior flag officer of the German battleship Scharnhorst. He entered the German Imperial Navy in June 1943 and spent most of his career in the destroyer fleet. He served as commander of the 4th Destroyer Flotilla during the German assault on the Norwegian port of Narvik and the full invasion of Norway. Following Narvik he was appointed to the rank of commander of destroyers. In May 1940 he was the recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. He died in the sinking of the Scharnhorst during the Battle of the North Cape off the coast of Norway along with the Scharnhorst's Captain Fritz Julius Hintze and 1,932 crewmen.
