Seward Joseph Stivers was born about 1855 in Jones County, Iowa, the son of William H. Stivers (1830-1896) and Emily Baugh Stivers (1836-1894). He was first married to Blanche Moyer (dates unknown) on 6 July 1875 in Mahaska County, Iowa. The marriage didn't last, and he married again to Elnora R. "Ella" Buno (1855-1910) on 4 April 1877 in Toledo, Iowa. They had five daughters and one son. They divorced sometime ca. September 1900. He was a farmer. He married a third time to Nancy Caroline Williams (Simons) (1856-1922) in O'Brien County, Iowa on 17 October 1907. They later relocated to Minneapolis, MN. After he was widowed in 1922, he lived with his daughter in Berwyn, Illinois. He died on 22 July 1937 in Berwyn, IL at the age of 82 and was interred at Oak Woods Cemetery.

From the Cedar Rapids "Gazette," dated September 12, 1900: "Ella B. Stivers vs Seward J Stivers; trial to court; decree of divorce as prayed; plaintiff awarded care and custody of minor children."
