Daniel was convicted of crushing the skull of a miner named Wood with a stove leg and stealing $27.00 from him. In separate accounts his age is given as 22, 24 to 25, and 26.

At his execution The Dubuque Herald reported "He was dressed in white pants, patent leather pumps, white under shirt and a fine white overshirt, open at the neck without a neck handkerchief…In his hand he carried a black crucifix… "

The execution did not go smoothly and it took at least 13 minutes for Clifford to die.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society took charge of his body and made arrangements for his burial.
