US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served New York's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1961 until 1979. Orphaned at the age of six, he was raised by his two older sisters and an aunt. He attained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University and later earned his law degree from Columbia University. During World War II, Pike served as a pilot with the United States Marine Corps and flew roughly 120 missions in the Pacific Theater. His war experience earned him five Air Medals. Upon his return home, he practiced law privately. During his tenure in Congress, Pike was an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War and spearheaded efforts to reduce military spending. He served as chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence.
