Born 24 May 1810 in St. Michaels township near Fredericktown, Madison county, Missouri to Robert Francis Crawford and Elizabeth Francis Crawford (she is daughter of Henry Francis, a American Revolution patriot).
His family immigrated to Arkansas when he was a youth. He married Almira Elizabeth Zachary in 1837,(she is the daughter of Caleb Baldwin Zachary and Mary Zachary). In 1842, he moved his wife and
three children to Lamar Co., TX. In a few years they moved to Bonham, Fannin Co., Texas where they farmed.
In 1850, he was elected sheriff and re=elected in 1852. At the expiration of the second term he became a candidate for chief justice and was elected by a large majority. In 1861,
he was elected senator in the state legislature for the term of four years, but owing to the circumstances of his private family affairs, after two years' service he resigned his office and retired to private life.
He helped organize the frontier militia to protect the area during the Civil War, Three of his sons enlisted in the Confederate army in 1863.
He and his wife had 15 children, which included three sets of twins. Lafayette, Bartlett Alexander, Elizabeth Frances, Alfred Jasper,Albert Newton, Robert Henry, George Washington, Melinda Frances,
Samuel T., Marie Antoinette, Sarah Anne, William Woodruff, Eugenia Elizabeth, Sophronia Belle,John Francis Jr. and John.
After the Civil War, John sold all his properties in Fannin Co. and moved to Ellis Co.* (story excerpts by Alta Farris Cole in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas records.)
Almira passed away on 22 Jan 1873, He died in his home on 9 Apr 1893.
