Gold Hill Man Dies Suddenly

VIRGINIA CITY, Sept. 24. (Special)--A life-long resident of the Comstock Lode, Humphrey S. Symons, 72, was found dead tonight at his home in Gold Hill.
His death was discovered by a neighbor, Tom Lynch, who called at the house early this evening and found Mr. Symons dead in his bed. He had been in failing health the past two months.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Capitol Mortuary in Carson City following arrival from Oakland of the only known relatives, cousins Mrs. E.J. Wood and Mrs. Hazel Moore.
Mr. Symons was born on July 28, 1879, in Crown Point Ravine in Gold Hill, His father, who had come to the Comstock from England in the earliest boom days of this area, was a police officer who lost his life in the line of duty in Gold Hill.
Humphrey Symons followed the occupation of miner, also working as a teamster, until his retirement a few years ago. He was active in fraternal and civic affairs, serving on the Gold Hill school board; and he was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 1. Colfax, Rebekah Lodge No. 1,, Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 523, all of Virginia City. His wife died several years ago, and there are no known surviving relatives other than the two cousins in Oakland, Calif.
