MASKELL, Neb. -- Ethelyn Gayle (Cook) Nelson, 91, formerly of Maskell died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at Vermillion Care Center in Vermillion, S.D. after a debilitating illness following two hip surgeries.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Maskell, with Miss Susan Urbance, PMA, and her nephew, the Rev. Dr. Ben McCracken officiating. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery, Lincoln, Neb. Visitation with the family present will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca, Neb.

Ethelyn was born Jan. 14, 1914, in rural Dixon County, near Maskell, to W. Henry and Jensine "Sena" (Anderson) Cook. She was baptized April 5, 1914, at Lime Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maskell. She was confirmed June 5, 1927, at Zion Lutheran Church, now known as Faith Lutheran Church in Maskell. She remained a Lutheran all of her life. She graduated from high school in Maskell in 1931. She enrolled in Wayne State Teachers College (now known at Wayne State) in the fall of 1931. She completed the one year teacher program in the spring of 1932. She taught from 1932 to 1937 in a rural school at Lime Grove, Neb. During this time, she boarded with Harold and Jeanette Juhlin. In the fall of 1937, she returned to Wayne State Teachers College and graduated in 1939 with a bachelor of art degree in education. She then taught two years (1939-1941) in an elementary school in Hawarden, Iowa. In 1941, she contracted to teach in Missouri Valley, Iowa, where she taught until 1945, when she moved to Omaha.

She was united in marriage to Otis Everett Nelson on May 23, 1944, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. She worked in the Brandeis Department Store until 1946, when she moved to Lincoln, Neb., where she taught at Hawthorne Elementary until her retirement in 1977. After the couple retired, they moved to Boulder, Colo. Otis died March 9, 1987, in Boulder. Later in 1987, she returned to Lincoln and lived there until November 1999. She then moved to Hartington, Neb., and lived at the Pine Lane Assisted Living to be near relatives. In August 2005, she experienced two hip surgeries, three weeks apart and was currently residing at Vermillion Care Center in Vermillion, S.D.

She and her husband, Otis (better known as Pete) made their lives precious to all of their nieces and nephews. They were very active supporters of the Husker football team and would travel and follow them around to most games.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lincoln and Atonement Lutheran Church in Boulder, Colo. She was a member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma (a national honorary education association), a member of Zeta Chapter, Lincoln Area Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association, Nebraska State Education Association, Kappa Kappa Iota, Alpha Psi Omega (a national honorary dramatics fraternity), Sigma Tau Delta (a national honorary English fraternity), Sigma Chi and the YWCA.

She is survived by a brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otis; a sister and her husband, Arnie and Mildred Holden; a brother and his wife, Elmer and Ruth Cook; and a sister, Leone Hemenway.

Pallbearers will be Robert Hemenway, Russell Koch, Larry Bumsted, Richard Holden, Jerry Koch and Craig Rowland.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Wayne State Foundation, Wayne State College, 1111 Main Street, Wayne NE. 68787.
