Long believed apocryphal by both researchers and actual relatives, Manfred was the firstborn son of Samuel and Minnie Marx, parents of the Marx Brothers. Since he went unmentioned for so long, even among family members, not much is known about his short life. Although previously believed by some to have died of tuberculosis at three months old, his death certificate paints a different picture. Manfred was actually seven months old at death, the cause of which was attributed to asthenia and entero-colitis (a milder strain of influenza). He is buried next to his
maternal grandmother Fanny Schoenberg # 18545602. Sadly, no pictures of baby Manfred are known to exist, and one can only speculate about how history might have been different had he lived into adulthood.
