British Navy Admiral. He was one of the leading British Naval admirals of the eighteenth century. Appointed Commodore and Commander-in-Chief of the Newfoundland Station in 1749, he played an important role in against the French during the Seven Years War 1756 to 1763. After the capture of Quebec and fall of Canada in 1759, he was promoted Rear Admiral and was Commander-in-Chief of the Leeward Islands Station in the West Indies in 1761. There his fleet captured Spanish convoy and forced the French to surrender. During the American War of Independence, he destroyed or captured fifteen ships and was promoted Vice-Admiral in 1781. In 1783, he became Admiral of Great Britain the navy's highest professional honor and lived in retirement until his death.
