On September 20, 1927 as Ray H. Lewis, he married Mary Stuart LaTrobe, daughter of Colonel Osmun Latrobe, in Meade County, South Dakota.
In December 1951 he was granted a divorce from Mary Stuart LaTrobe Lewis.

Ray Hartwell Lewis was a native of Houghton, Michigan, In 1917 he graduated from the United States Military Academy. He served in France during World War I. An Army legal officer, he participated in the war crimes trials in Germany after World War II. He also served in the Korean War. In 1951 he retired from the Unites States Army. In 1963 he moved to Corvallis, Oregon. He died at age 73 on Wednesday, January 3, 1968 in Corvallis. Survivors included his widow, Jean; one son and one daughter, all of Corvallis and two sisters: Mrs. Marjorie Lawrence of Winter Park, Florida and Mrs. Dorothy Edwards of Houghton. Local arrangements were by McHenry Mortuary. Arrangements at West Point were by William S. Hogan Mortuary in Highland Falls, New York. Services and interment were at the West Point Cemetery.
