Alexander Stepanovich Popov
Birth: Mar. 16, 1859, Russian Federation
Death: Jan. 13, 1906, Russian Federation

Scientist. Guglielmo Marconi became known as the inventor of the radio around the world, but it was Popov who on May 7, 1895, in a lecture before the Russian Physicist Society of St. Petersburg, stated he had transmitted and received signals at an intervening distance of 6 hundred yards. Marconi, using equipment very similar to Popov's, successfully transmitted and received signals within the limits of his father's estate at Bologna, Italy. Popov's radio system earned him a Grand Gold Medal for research at the Paris International Exposition of 1900. (bio by: julia&keld)
