Orrin Joseph "O.J." Armatys of Grand Island, Nebraska, died Monday, February 3, 2014, at his home. O.J was born February 18, 1943, at Pasadena, CA. He was the son of Leo John and Dorothy E. (Power) Armatys.

Survivors are: wife, Ruth Armatys of Grand Island, Nebraska; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Kris Armatys of Waverly, Nebraska; daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Scott Gorneau of South Portland, Maine; sisters and brother-in-law, Cynthia Rutledge and her significant other Smokey Vandergrift of Oak Creek, Colorado and Anthonette and Don Hosman of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; brothers and sisters-in-law, Anthony and Sally Armatys of Central City, Nebraska, Bryan and Karen Armatys of Ratan, New Mexico and bWalter and Gail Armatys of Richmond, Texas; grandchildren, Benjamin Armatys, William Armatys, Aidan Gorneau and Nola Gorneau and a host of family and friends.

O.J. moved with his family to Central City, Nebraska, at 9 months of age when his father was deployed during World War II. He attended Central City (NE.) Public Schools graduating in 1961. He served in the U.S. Army from June of 1965 until March of 1967, spending one year in Vietnam before his honorable discharge. He returned to Grand Island, Nebraska where he was hired as the first full- time ambulance attendant for the City of Grand Island, Nebraska. He was joined in marriage to Ruth Schaaf on January 17, 1970, at Emmet, Nebraska. They lived in Grand Island, Nebraska and in 1983 he transferred to the Utilities Department where he worked as a power plant operator until his retirement in 2005.

O.J. enjoyed yard work, biking, jogging, fixing whatever needed fixed and keeping his cars clean, especially his Corvette.

O.J. was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Grand Island, Nebraska, the American Legion and retired member of IBEW #1597.

O.J. was preceded in death by: parents, infant sisters, Mary and Margaret Armatys.

Services were, Saturday, February, 8, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Grand Island, Nebraska. The Rev. Charles L. Torpey as officiator.

Burial was in Grand Island City Cemetery, Grand Island, Nebraska. Military honors was provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard.
