U.S. Congressman. After attending Oberlin College, Ohio, he graduated from the Cleveland Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1864, and joined the Ranney, Backus, and Noble Law Firm. During the Civil War, he served in Company D, 150th, Ohio Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he returned to the practice of law until 1867. In 1867, he took a position as collector and bookkeeper at the First National Bank of Painesville, Ohio. Entering politics, he was elected Mayor of Painesville, serving from 1877 to 1879. In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in the storage business and the manufacture of handles for agricultural implements, until his death.
