John Stafford Terhune, Jr. was born 1828 on the family's farm near Princeton, Mercer Co, NJ, the 5th of 8 known surviving children (4 boys/4 girls) born to Judge John Stafford Terhune and his (1st) wife Esther "Etty" Letson. His father, John S. Terhune, Sr., was one of the foremost judges on the New Jersey bench serving as Judge of the Court of Errors and Appeals and was also in the printing, bookbinding, and publishing business his entire life. John Terhurn Jr. would follow in his footsteps.

On November 5, 1851, 23-year old John married 19-year old Catherine "Kate" Polhemus Nevius, daughter of David Nevius Jr. and Margaret Schureman of Monmouth County, NJ, a descendant of prominent NJ families. The couple resided in New Brunswick until 1855 when they removed to Grand Rapids, MI and subsequently to Janesville, WS, and finally Chicago, IL where John was in the publishing business.

John and Kate would become parents to 5 known children:

* Margaret Schureman Terhune (1852-1938) who married Edward Dorchester Johnson of New Brunswick, NJ.

* Mary Wood Terhune (1832-1912), who married Walter Thomas Bradbury of England and resided in Illinois.

* Catherine "Kate" Clifford Morrough Terhune (1860-1937), who married Edward C. Douglas of Chicago.

* Lilian Ione Terhune (1866-1948), who married Irving Thomas Hartz of Illinois.

* Paul Vincent Hurlburt Terhune(1872-1940)

John Stafford Terhune, Jr. died in 1887 at age 59. His widow of 36 years would marry (2nd) six years later on April 27, 1893 to James Charles Cameron of Prince Edward Island, Canada, son of Rev. John Cameron. This marriage was childless, and Kate survived him as well, passing in 1912 at age 80.

All of his daughters would marry. His only son, Paul, never married and for some years was a stage actor. He died in 1940 while in the care of the Chicago Home for the Incurables.
