He was the son of John Baptist Farr Jr and Ann Mildred Russell. He was educated at Charlotte Hall Military Academy.
When war broke out Joseph traveled to Richmond, Virginia and enlisted in Company H, First Maryland Infantry on June 18, 1861. He was sick in a Manassas hospital with remittent fever in Oct 1861.
Joseph was severely wounded at Harrisonburg, Virginia on June 6, 1862 and was taken to a hospital in Harrisonburg where he died from his wounds July 4, 1862. He was buried at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg, Virginia but was removed and reinterred here.
