When war broke out Joseph traveled to Richmond, Virginia and enlisted in Company H, First Maryland Infantry on June 18, 1861. He was sick in a Manassas hospital with remittent fever in Oct 1861.
Joseph was severely wounded at Harrisonburg, Virginia on June 6, 1862 and was taken to a hospital in Harrisonburg where he died from his wounds July 4, 1862. He was buried at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg, Virginia but was removed and reinterred here.
