John W. "Jack" Houpt, 86, of Marion died early Wednesday morning, December 3, 2008 at Marion General Hospital after a long illness.
He was born on April 7, 1922 in Marion, Ohio the son of the late William C. and Mabel Y. (Allen) Houpt.
He was a graduate of Harding High School class of 1940. After high school he was accepted into the United States Naval Academy. He received his degree in Chemical Engineering in 1945.
On June 6, 1945, the day John was inducted into the United States Navy, he married Vivian Joy Hancock in Annapolis, Maryland. They have shared 63 ½ wonderful years together as husband and wife.
His time in the Navy included a role in the Navy Submarine Service.
John was the owner and operator of the Houpt Monument Company for over 50 years.
He was always on the go and even enjoyed ice skating, playing hockey on the Country Club pond, skiing, and roller blading as a spry 80 year old! He also enjoyed sailing out of Cedar Point Yacht Club.
John was a past president of the Marion Lions Club, and a member of the Marion Country Club and Symposiarch.
He will be missed by his wife Vivian; his brother Dan Haupt of Columbus; his sister Arlene Wedeward of Marshall, Wisconsin; and his special friend Steve Redmond.
John was preceded in death by his son William R. "Randy" Houpt.
Private graveside services will be held in Marion Cemetery on Friday December 5, 2008.
