Lt. Col. Ret. Willard Sydney Benson, 94, a resident of Moses Lake since 1949, passed away Friday, March 9, 2012 at Hearthstone Assisted Living with his children at his side. Vault interment with full military honors will be held at Guarding Angel Cemetery, 2595 Road L N.E. at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 17, 2012 and will be followed by a Celebration of Life at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1020 South A Street at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be Thursday March 15th from noon to 5:00 p.m. and Friday March 16th from noon to 5:00 p.m. Please sign the online guestbook or leave a note for the family at www.kayserschapel.com Arrangements are in care of Kayser's Chapel and Crematory.

Willard was born in Cooperstown, ND November 15, 1917 to Norwegian emigrant's the late George Olai and Bertine Berge Benson. Being the son of a photographer in Mayville, North Dakota, it was convenient for him to continue his education at Mayville State Teachers College where he graduated; he continued his education over the years until receiving his Masters Degree in Education from the University of Washington. After receiving his four year degree from Mayville at 23 years of age, he entered into what at that time was the Army Air Corp and is currently known as the United States Air Force, he retired from the Air Force Reserves in 1966 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

In 1943 Willard met the beautiful Dorothy Morgan who after a two year courtship united in marriage the 23rd day in May, 1945 at McDill Field in Tampa, Florida. Willard's first teaching job was in Davenport, Washington. After four years they moved to Moses Lake, Washington in 1949. In 1973 Willard retired from teaching at Moses Lake High School and continued to sell insurance from his insurance agency "Benson Insurance". Upon selling the agency to the Blessing Agency he retired in 1984.

Willard a highly educated person was adored by all. He was dedicated to the Lord, his family, friends, community and country. He was an adoring husband and constant as a Father always supportive, loving and fair. He enjoyed travel with his wife, coin collecting, playing bridge and reading. He liked gadgets and loved to tinker, doing his own remodeling projects, electrical work and gardening. His skills were generously shared with his friends and family whenever he was needed. Willard was proud of being a lifetime active member of the Sons of Norway. In addition he was a member of WEA, ROA, Kiwanis, American Legion, NEA, NRTA-AARP program, MOAA, Lambda Delta Lambda National Physical Science Fraternity, a member of Big I and PIA, and the United States Air Force Retired Reserves.

Willard was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Louise Benson, parents George and Bertine Benson, brother Robert Benson, and brother Laurence Benson.

Survivors are a son Norman Benson and his wife Linda Benson of Moses Lake, daughter Karen Luciani and husband John Luciani of Echo, Oregon. Grandchildren Bertina and husband Eli Garza of Moses Lake, Scott and wife Lori Benson of Hayden Lake and Rachel and husband Adam Archer of Hermiston, Oregon. Also surviving are seven great grandchildren.
