U.S. Congressman. Born in Clinton County, Ohio, he moved with his parents to Indiana in 1836, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1846 and commenced to practice law in Wabash, Indiana. He was a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives in 1851, Treasurer of Wabash County, (1855-59) and Provost Marshal of the eleventh district of Indiana, (1862-65). During the Civil War, he served in Company A, 75th Regiment, Indiana Infantry, Union Army, as Quartermaster. After the war, he was elected to the Indiana General Assembly in 1865. In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving until 1881. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 84 in Wabash, Indiana.
