Thomas Ranney was from Scotland and the first to be buried in this cemetary. His wife was Mary Hubbard. He lived in the section of Middletown known as Upper Houses now known as Cromwell. A very complete lineage of decendants to the early 1900's can be found in the book Middletown Upper Houses available at the Cromwell Library History Room.

This is the grave with marker and boulder. The boulder was moved in the 1950's and was too much time, effort, and cost to return. This photo was taken from Middletown Upper Houses which was published in 1908, making this photo about 100 years old. According to Mrs. Mascelli, at one time the marker and the boulder were attached and it formed a "shoe" like object. Many have thought that Thomas was a shoemaker because of the way the marker and boulder were placed. Thomas Ranney's wife is supposedly buried there also although un-marked.

This is the origional grave marker. In the 1950's, a family member moved it to another family members grave in honor of his mom being a Ranney. This left the grave unmarked until Mrs. Mascelli had a replica placed there. In 1994, the origional marker was obtained by the family and the replica was returned to the historical society. Someone had painted the origional stone white.

Mrs. Elizabeth Mascelli who lived next door to the cemetary and is no stranger to the Ranney Family. These photos were sent to me by her before her passing. Not only a friend to the cemetary, but an honorary "Ranney" who was a key player in restoring and sprucing up the Thomas Ranney grave.
