Emil R. Vyhlidal Jr., 73, of Lawton, Okla., died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, in Lawton.

Emil was born Nov. 19, 1939, in North Bend to Hattie and Emil Richard Vyhlidal. He attended school and graduated from high school in North Bend. Shortly after graduating in 1956, he enlisted into the U.S. Army. He had a career as a medic that exceeded 20 years. During his career he earned many honors and awards to include the following: National Defense Service Medal, Medical Badge, Good Conduct Medal Fifth Award, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Sharpshooter Badge (both M-14 and M-16), and two Overseas Service Bars.

He served one combat tour in Vietnam. He also had many other assignments in Germany and France, and several state side assignments including Fort Sill, Okla., where his family decided to call home.

After he retired from the military, he went to work for the Great Plains Area Vo-Tech for a few years. He then went to work for the Post Office where he worked until his retirement after 15 years of service. In 1977, he received a pilot's license and took his family and friends for rides on his airplane.

Emil was a 32nd degree mason/.

The funeral was held Aug. 13 at Whinery-Huddleston Chapel, officiated by Army Chaplain Major Steve Slauson. Burial was in Fort Sill National Cemetery.
