08 Nov 1843: Marries Sarah Delia Taylor at the Taylor Farm, Jefferson, Schoharie Co., New York.

1850: Removed to Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York.

Bet. 1855–1857: Removed to Osage, Mitchell Co., Iowa with only his son, George E. Merchant. His wife, Sarah Delia Taylor, abandoned the family in 1854 and remained in Brooklyn (as per her pension application of 1862).

1857-59: George Fuller Merchant and Sarah Delia (Taylor) Merchant unknowingly file for separate divorce decrees, he first in Mitchell Co., Iowa (Judge Samuel Murdock, presiding) then she in Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York (Judge James I. Roosevelt, presiding). Both claim custody of their only son, George Elwood Merchant.

Bef. 02 Mar 1858: Marries Lydia Ada Tucker (who dies on this date) in Osage, Mitchell Co., Iowa.

Bet. 02 Mar 1858–25 Jun 1860: Marries Lydia's sister, Mary E. Tucker, in Osage, Mitchell Co., Iowa.

Bef. 1863: Removed to Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.

Bet. 21 Jun 1870–16 Aug 1873: Divorce granted in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.

16 Aug 1873: Marries Mary B. Bradley in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.

24 Oct 1890: Files pension application 477,079 as father of a Civil War casualty; rejected as his first wife, Sarah Delia (Taylor) Merchant, still living, had claim to the pension since their son's death on 06 Apr 1862.

29 Nov 1890: Wife Mary B. (Bradley) Merchant dies in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.

13 Oct 1893: "Obituary: George F. Merchant; The funeral of George F. Merchant took place yesterday from his late residence, No. 1807 Indiana Avenue. A New Yorker by birth, Mr. Merchant had resided in Chicago for over forty[sic] years. Rev. Frank Bristol, who conducted the services, was an old friend of the deceased, and, after sketching his career, he pronounced a eulogy upon his character. It was the desire of Mr. Merchant that his remains should be laid beside those of his wife, who died three years ago, and it was in accordance with this wish that he was buried in Oakwoods cemetery. The pallbearers were: Richard Brunt, Ferd[sic] Gadsby, Charles Nickelson, J.K. Mish, H.C. Denison, S. B. McMarey." (1)
